Awareness Campaign – IWIC’14 International Workshop on Island Challenges – Waste Management
Environmental consciousness is extremely low on the Greek islands and a high concern to us. Because of limited resources, but changing lifestyles on islands worldwide, accumulating mountains of waste have no place to go. Expert know-how is urgently sought. Sails-For-Science organized from 01 – 03 October an International Workshop about waste management on islands. The workshop was free-of-charge and open to the public. Experts in waste management came together on Samos from the Greek Islands, Malta, Sardinia – Italy, France, United Kingdom, Alaska – USA, Easter Island, Australia, even from rural communities in Tibet and other places to discuss viable solutions. Representatives from the Greek Ministry of Environment, the local Government, Municipality, Mr. Yiannis Boutaris, Mayor of Thessaloniki, and the Greek-German Assembly participated. The event was organized by Sails-For-Science in cooperation with the University of the Aegean, Samos.
